"Mr President, as Parliament’s rapporteur on corporate social responsibility (CSR), I share the grief of the families of those who died from the burns and the suffocation, trapped behind grilles on windows or blocked fire escapes. There were 111 victims, now making 700 in Bangladesh alone during the last decade. I am sympathetic with a country which relies on clothing for 80% of its exports and, as its Ambassador herself said to me, relies on the shared responsibility of the companies themselves. So in this debate we should condemn companies, including Walmart, Gap and Sweden’s H&M, who have so far refused to sign Bangladesh’s fire and building safety agreement to upgrade factories. We should ask why C&A from the Netherlands, KiK from Germany and Britain’s Edinburgh Woollen Mill source from Tazreen but have refused to meet the workers’ own trade unions or respond to their demands, despite being urged to do so. In my report I will acknowledge the progress made with the brands by multi-stakeholder initiatives like the Clean Clothes Campaign and the Ethical Trading Initiative. I will back and seek to reinforce the Commission’s express desire to better enforce the OECD guidelines on multinational enterprise and the UN guiding principles on business and human rights. I believe these can help prevent future Tazreens. Mr Barnier, when you bring forward – as I encouraged you to do earlier – your long-awaited proposal on company transparency in the supply chain and when, MEP colleagues, you debate and vote my proposals, do not let anyone say that corporate responsibility is optional. Listen to what Bangladesh says to us. Accept shared responsibility and, in doing so, we can end the death toll."@en1
