"EU youth unemployment is at a record high. Recent statistics show that the rate of youth unemployment for the EU as a whole was 23.7% at the end of 2012 and currently stands at 20% in the UK. I supported calls for a youth guarantee scheme, which aims to ensure that young people who have been unemployed or have left formal education for longer than 4 months are offered a job, an apprenticeship or further education. It is vital that young people are given a chance, and this scheme would provide the necessary funding to make sure that the youth of today can be successful and contribute to growth in the EU. At the moment, the cost of unemployment is estimated at around EUR 153 billion across the EU, a figure which could be greatly reduced with this new instrument. I am disappointed that UKIP and UK Conservative MEPs did not support this proposal but fully hope that the Member States will take it seriously and think about the change it could bring to today’s youth across Europe."@en1
