"UK Conservatives fully agree with the objective of tackling youth unemployment. However, we have concerns about some of the measures contained within this resolution, including the prescription of a four-month window, which we believe seek to micromanage Member States by introducing new European initiatives which will duplicate the good work already done by Member States. The UK Government has initiated a comprehensive series of initiatives, including expanding apprenticeships and investing in training, designed to help young people, whatever their circumstances, get the help they need to enter the labour market, and has committed almost GBP 1 billion to be spent over the next three years to provide unemployed young people with extra help as part of a new ‘Youth Contract’. We recognise the EU has an important role in adding value to the work underway in many Member States, by promoting and facilitating the exchange of best practice, coordinating policy initiatives, and promoting mobility – which will help the economies of Member States grow and create jobs. More flexibility in the timing of such a guarantee is needed, as we have said repeatedly – there is no one-size-fits-all solution. Therefore UK Conservative MEPs voted against this resolution."@en1
