"Mr President, I am pleased that long-term youth unemployment has fallen in my constituency of London. There were 10% fewer long-term unemployed people in London in 2012 than there were two years ago. The Conservative Party in the UK is committed to creating jobs in the capital and beyond. Hand in hand with ambitious reform of the UK benefits systems, the Conservative-led Government is ensuring that work always pays more than welfare.
I believe the Commission’s recommendations for a youth guarantee scheme is little more than another handout. It would not improve the situation of young people and, by forcing Member States to guarantee jobs, would increase tensions within the labour market. We need to help young people into work and to give them the support they need. One way of doing this is to have more companies offer work placements. The youth guarantee scheme would put more burdens on companies and ultimately fail the young people it intends to help."@en1
