"MEPs welcome a recent proposal by the Commission to implement the Nagoya Protocol which aims to protect the rights of countries and local communities that allow their genetic resources and associated traditional knowledge to be used. However, we have major reservations about the calls for prior informed consent and mandatory requirements on disclosing the origin of genetic resources during patent proceedings. We also believe that further work must be carried out to clarify and consolidate the legal terminology in this area – as interest in this area grows, this legal terminology is extremely important. It is for this reason that I abstained from voting."@en1
