"Mr President, on 3 December 2012 Belfast City Council democratically voted to limit the flying of the British flag to 17 designated days at City Hall. Unionist politicians instigated an upheaval in the run-up to the Council vote by distributing 40 000 leaflets which led to daily protests, many of them violent and most of them illegal. Yet these politicians act as though they are not responsible for these predictable consequences. The loyalist paramilitary group the Ulster Volunteer Force, and the British National Party have been actively involved with police officers being injured and attacks on the Catholic district of the Short Strand. The promise of the Good Friday Agreement for a new society in which all citizens are respected and where justice and equality are the guiding principles has to be advanced. Without doubt the overwhelming majority of people want the Irish peace process supported and progressed. To that end, we need an all-party cross-community response to the flag protest and to the violence."@en1
