"Mr President, ten years ago I was the co-author of a successful written declaration on the issue of live transport of animals, calling for an eight-hour limit and a 500-kilometre limit. Since that time we have seen a massive increase in the number of live animals transported – in the case of pigs, a 70% increase. It also affects cattle, sheep and horses. Two-thirds of the transport sadly lasts longer than eight hours. Long-distance transport causes animals great suffering and gives rise to costs which are ultimately borne by our consumers. Contrary to the Commission, the members of the Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development of this Parliament, like myself, believe that this situation requires urgent attention. As a strong champion of animal welfare, I wish to see effective and uniform enforcement of existing legislation on animal transport assured across all EU Member States. I would also like to see more animals slaughtered close to their places of rearing, and thus transported on the hook rather than on the hoof."@en1
