"I supported this own-initiative report, which calls on the Commission to improve regulation governing the transport of animals for slaughter. The report calls for the Commission to ensure existing rules are properly enforced. It also calls for the Commission to strengthen those rules by proposing a number of measures aimed at improving the welfare of animals being transported to slaughter so that they are not subjected to unnecessary suffering. These include demanding a proper, science-based review of welfare standards and a minimum journey time of eight hours for horses being transported for slaughter. The eight-hour limit was a key issue for Labour MEPs and our constituents; a Europe-wide campaign calling for this received over a million signatures. We were disappointed to see some of the demands of the report watered down by those on the right in the Parliament but, as the call for an eight-hour limit on the transport of horses was maintained, we ultimately supported it."@en1
