"This report responds to the Commission’s report on the impact of Regulation 1/2005 on the protection of animals during transport, which came into force in 2007. I fully support this legislation and the proper welfare of animals during transport. Regulation 1/2005 has been effective in improving standards; however, problems have been identified in relation to Member State implementation and enforcement of the rules. Irish hauliers and exporters have invested significantly in upgrading transporters to fully meet welfare rules. I support the overall report but did not vote in favour of calls for an eight-hour maximum transport time. I do not support the idea of new or additional legislation. We already have legislation that is not fully implemented and this must be addressed by the Member States involved and the Commission. Despite these reservations I supported the report in the final vote as it contains important elements relating to the welfare of animals and their protection during transport."@en1
