"Antimicrobial resistant bacteria are estimated to be responsible for around 25,000 deaths across the EU every year. They are a major threat to global public health and tackling them is one of the highest priorities for European health agencies. I therefore supported this report, which calls for: more prudent use of antibiotics in humans and animals; measures aimed at reducing the use of antibiotics in animals, especially of those that are deemed critical for humans; and greater monitoring and reporting of the prescribing and use of antimicrobials. While resistance to existing antimicrobials is increasing, development of new antimicrobials has been minimal, so I am also pleased that this report calls for encouragement to be given for the development of new or alternative treatments."@en1
