"Mr President, I voted against the EU-Colombia/Peru Free Trade Agreement mostly because I feel it is premature. While I understand that progress has been made in developing a road map, I share the concerns of many of the trade union movements which have contacted me – ETUC and the Irish Congress of Trade Unions, in particular – and indeed many other NGOS which are very concerned about the human rights and environmental protection issues. Issues such as freedom of association for workers, an end to impunity for violence against trade unionists and, indeed, failure to recommend ILO recommendations, are all issues that have been brought to my attention.
While I do understand that commitments have been made in this regard and that a monitoring group is to be created, which is very welcome, I would have preferred to have deferred the report until such time as we could have real and measurable tangible progress in these areas. I understand that the proposal has actually been adopted at this stage and I look forward to the strict implementation of the safeguards that have been built into the resolution."@en1
