"Mr President, I would like to thank the rapporteur on this report. The importance of the digital single market to the European economy has been comprehensively outlined in this report. However it is the issue of e-books and their accessibility in libraries that I wanted to raise today. Currently, certain publishers are refusing to provide libraries with books in an e-format and this has huge implications as more and more books are only available in e-format. If we are not careful, an e-book apartheid could be created across the EU where those who can afford this will have access to books and those who cannot, will not. We have an opportunity just now to bring libraries and publishers together to create an interoperable system and where possible to make sure that the single market in this particular point actually works. So I think it is very important that we take that opportunity at this moment and make sure that we do not create e-book apartheid in the European Union."@en1
