"Mr President, the current situation of migrants is a legacy of the past. With this motion for a resolution, we wish to galvanise the new Libyan Government to action with regard to migrants’ rights and to make clear that we would like very much and are prepared to assist it in establishing new policies towards migrants and asylum seekers, as this is a crucial issue. Non-governmental organisations working in Libya have reported numerous human rights violations, including sexual violence towards children and women. Finally, in order to ensure better protection of migrants’ rights, it is vital that Libya, which has successfully started out on the path to democracy, should draw a line under the past and the legacy of the dictatorship by ratifying international conventions, including, of course, the 1951 Convention relating to the Status of Refugees."@en1
