His arrest and subsequent death in suspicious circumstances raise serious questions about the democratic principles of the Iranian authorities. These practices must be discouraged at all cost. As a defender of human rights, the Union must find way to put pressure on the Iranian authorities. Political prisoners must be released without delay and the discrimination against religious minorities must end.
