"The 18th United Nations Conference on Climate Change will be held from 26 November to 7 December 2012 in Doha, Qatar. It follows on from two other major international environmental summits: Durban (2011) and Rio+20 (2012). I supported this resolution because it provides a road map for the European Parliament delegation that will take part in the conference, which will have to work to obtain a legally-binding international agreement. In addition, it stresses the fact that the Union must set an example by honouring its commitments and showing an ambitious approach to climate change mitigation and climate finance, and that all EU institutions consequently have a duty to engage in intensive climate diplomacy ahead of the Conference. Furthermore, it underlines the problem of finance, more relevant than ever in this period of crisis, and suggests ideas for resolving it. Finally, it reiterates a principle that seems to me to be essential: we must move towards a sustainable economy, which takes the environment into account throughout the production cycle."@en1
