"I voted in favour of the report on the amendment of Council Regulation (EC) No 1185/2003 on the removal of fins of sharks on board vessels. I strongly condemn the practice of finning, which involves cutting off sharks’ fins on vessels before throwing their bodies back into the sea, and has been officially banned by the European Union since 2003. However, the complex system which permits the removal of fins within a ‘fin-to-carcass’ weight ratio of 5 % makes simple control and enforcement of the legislation impossible. With this in mind, I support the Commission’s proposal to make it mandatory to use a method whereby the fins remain attached to the carcass in order to fight effectively against finning. This will reduce the number of sharks fished and allow us to preserve an increasingly endangered species."@en1
