"The practice of removing the fins from sharks and throwing the rest of the body into the sea is deplorable and, as such, must be absolutely prohibited and controlled, in parallel with the monitoring of endangered species catches. However, there is a clear difference between that practice and the practice of removing the fins from sharks on board vessels, with the carcass being retained on board in order to fully use the animal, and with the separation and freezing of the two parts – carcass and fins – which, as we know, are sent to different end markets and which, if separated after freezing, would seriously reduce the end quality and value of the products. It is clear that this procedure is justifiable only for the freezer vessel fleet and must be subject to strict traceability."@en1
