"Mr President, thank you, I voted in favour of the resolution on cyber security and defence. We have seen several cases where European Union institutions and individual Member States have suffered cyber attacks, such as Estonia in 2007. All agree that in the immediate future the number of such attacks will only increase and I therefore believe that these measures proposed by the European Parliament are necessary and very timely.
I agree entirely with the need for each Member State to adopt national action plans, but in particular there should be cooperation at various levels throughout the European Union and internationally, with the exchange of experience and sharing of knowledge.
Some countries that do not follow democratic values are inclined to either restrict the tremendous opportunities for communication or to subordinate these to their own interests. We need to take action to prevent the formation of favourable conditions enabling such countries and such policies of theirs to become consolidated."@en1
