"Madam President, once again the Court of Auditor’s report for 2011 makes splendid reading for our citizens. Here is an example: a farmer gets a subsidy for 150 sheep, the Court of Auditors discovers that the recipient did not have any sheep at all and so the payment was unlawful. That is clear reporting. I congratulate the Court of Auditors on its work.
Unfortunately, this is just the tip of the iceberg and for the eighteenth year in succession it turns out that Member States in the east and south of the Union especially are somewhat casual when it comes to applying for subsidies and are not too fussy about their auditing when it comes to taxpayers’ money from the citizens of northern Europe. Thriftiness is lost on them, it seems, so naming and shaming please.
I will just mention a couple of striking observations by the Court of Auditors: first, that it is difficult to determine the added value of the EU and, second, that economy and efficiency appear nowhere in the reports. The PVV has been saying this for years and it is gratifying to note that our point of view has now been confirmed by the Court of Auditors."@en1
