"Mr President, ladies and gentlemen, the failure to reach agreement during conciliation underlines all of the problems that make the EU no longer tenable. The hesitation regarding provision of financial assistance to the earthquake victims of Emilia-Romagna constitutes one of the most shameful episodes since the founding of the EU. There are many signs, however, that the Union is in danger of disappearing altogether. Various Member States are no longer willing to listen to requests from the Commission, evidence that the European Union is no longer able to generate interest or demonstrate its usefulness. One thing must be made clear: commitments made must be fulfilled and therefore any programmes that have been defined and established, such as Erasmus, must be provided with the resources necessary to continue. In the future we must act in a more pragmatic and less ideological fashion, setting ourselves objectives that are real priorities. I think that the first thing we should change is this European Union as it exists today. Nobody believes in it, least of all the Member States who founded it but who longer wish to fund it."@en1
