"As a member of the EP’s Committee on Petitions, I supported this report as it is an important step towards increasing the European citizens’ awareness of the activity of the committee as an institution to which anyone can turn. I believe that the report improves the transparency, accountability and functioning of the committee. The petitions received demonstrate that Europe has a mature civil society that is not afraid to raise its concerns before the European Parliament, as provided for by the Treaty. On the other hand, the majority of petitions could be resolved at Member State level. That is why there should be greater cooperation with the national authorities to ensure better application of European legislation and the protection of citizens’ fundamental rights and freedoms. It is also particularly important that the preparation and processing of petitions is not turned into a political tool and used for objectives from the Member States’ political agenda. They should be achieved objectively, reflecting the position of the European Parliament. In this period of crisis, the European and national institutions above all need to increase public confidence as a means of ensuring stability. I therefore want to congratulate the rapporteur on his excellent work. I voted for this report as a sign of support for the activity of the Committee on Petitions."@en1
