"I voted in favour of the report on the environmental impacts of shale gas and shale oil extraction activities. The complex debate on shale gas means that the solution to the problem is not black or white. As such, I am endeavouring to adapt a pragmatic approach: I am opposed to hydraulic fracturing, which is banned in France, in light of the serious effects it could have on the environment, especially groundwater. The Member States are responsible for implementing their own energy policy, so I could not support Ms Rivasi’s amendment. However, I am not opposed to the idea of prospection and research to improve our knowledge of our energy potential. These resources could enable us to reduce our energy dependence and reduce gas prices. It is thus better not to exclude possible extraction, but not to the detriment of the environment or renewable energies, which represent the future of our consumption model."@en1
