"Mr President, I abstained. Even though the report mentions scientific data on shale gas mining, there are still many unknowns. I accept that Europe is not competitive when it comes to energy resources. I also accept that the cost and the dependence on gas imports are high. However, we must strike a balance between our energy needs and environmental damage, which can be disastrous, in the medium and long term. We have yet to see an analysis of the impact on water and soil quality, flora and fauna, natural resources and agriculture, and on all economic activities in general. I welcome this report, however, and I call on the European Environmental Agency to complete the scientific analysis of these potential impacts. Sadly, many Member States wishing to avail of shale gas extraction do not yet have the technological capability to assess its environmental impact. In our drive to resolve a problem of the present, we should consider how this may affect the future."@en1
