The public consultation on the Single Market Act launched by the Commission revealed high levels of interest in social entrepreneurship and the social economy in general and in its ability to provide innovative responses to social, economic and, in some cases, environmental challenges through the development of sustainable jobs, the promotion of social inclusion and the improvement of local social services and territorial cohesion. Social enterprises operate by providing goods and services to the market, using their profits primarily to achieve social goals. Their ambitions are consistent with the goals of the undertaking which can be quantified by means of performance indicators. Profits must be reinvested mainly to promote social goals. Given the importance of these institutions, especially in the context of the crisis we find ourselves in, they should have suitable financial support, in particular through the European Social Fund."@en1
