"We share the rapporteur’s view that artistic creation contributes decisively to the ongoing development of cultural heritage. In this respect, what is known as the resale right – ensuring that the artist receives a percentage of the profit from the sale of a work of art – guarantees continuity of pay for artists, who very often sell their works at low prices at the start of their careers. In this way, the resale right for the benefit of the living author of an original work of art can be a useful tool to prevent discrimination against artists and to ensure that they receive appropriate compensation for their work. On this occasion, we can but defend the right to create and to cultural and artistic enjoyment – in such danger just now in Portugal – insofar as production of art, particularly by young artists, should be publicly valued and supported and not just viewed as a business opportunity."@en1
