"Today we are debating the promotion measures and information provision for agricultural products in Europe and the strategy we should adopt for promoting the tastes of Europe. The European agriculture and food sector could be increasingly competitive globally if we could effectively promote the diversity of our food and our production model, which is characterised by high standards of productivity, safety, animal welfare and environmental sustainability. Trade globalisation is increasing, opening up new markets and fresh opportunities for generating the growth we need to get through the economic crisis. What is more, we should not forget that European products have always had significant consumer appeal in larger third markets and should therefore benefit from targeted and strengthened promotional schemes. I therefore agree with my colleagues who would like to see the budget for improved information and promotion measures increased. I also fully support the School Fruit and School Milk Schemes, which aim to promote healthy eating among the very young, from the earliest age."@en1
