Last month unemployment in Europe topped the 25 million mark for the first time, and almost 80 million Europeans are threatened with poverty and social exclusion. In some countries this percentage is mainly made up of individuals aged between 18 and 24. The situation is really very difficult, and so the creation of new jobs is one of the most important priorities of the European Union. The key issues for the development of Europe appear to be to increase employment, especially among young people, to make it easier to transfer from education to work, to invest in enterprise and to promote and facilitate the establishment of people’s own business ventures. One way in which this will be made possible is through the Social Investment Pact, which I voted in favour of today. This Pact envisages a series of actions aimed at increasing the competitiveness of European workers, a significant increase in the number of new jobs for young people through, for example, the introduction of incentives for employers to employ graduates and the creation of good conditions for the development of businesses. Thank you very much."@en1
