The Consumer Credit Directive has undoubtedly increased consumer protection, which is welcome. On the whole, I believe we can be satisfied with the implementation process and I do not believe that the Directive currently needs to be revised. As this report suggests, the priority should be to ensure proper implementation in the Member States. The ‘sweep’ operation carried out by the Commission has been particularly useful in identifying problems with implementation.
Sustained efforts must be made to ensure that the provisions of the Directive with regard to information about offers in advertising material are not presented in a misleading way. In addition, consumers must be better informed about the risks of obtaining credit in a foreign currency due to exchange rate fluctuations. Not least, I believe it is important for consumers to be better informed about the opportunity to obtain credit in another Member State. This will probably boost cross-border credit and will favour the creation of an internal credit market, which is currently inadequate, even if there are other reasons for this situation, such as language."@en1
