Beyond the mere buying of fishing rights for EU vessels, these agreements commit the contracting parties to promoting responsible and sustainable fisheries policies. Greenland’s economy is highly dependent on fisheries and the export of fishery products to the EU. In 2010, exports to EU markets amounted to EUR 331 million, while imports from the EU were nearly twice as high. The fisheries sector generates 6 500 jobs.
