Limiting pollution and forced exploitation of an area is essential to safeguard its ecosystem. For this reason I voted in favour of the accession of the European Union to the Protocol for the Protection of the Mediterranean Sea against pollution resulting from exploration and exploitation of the continental shelf and the seabed and its subsoil. Recent research has revealed new reserves of fossil fuels under the seabed of the Mediterranean Sea, paving the way for new offshore extraction activities, so better regulation of these activities is necessary to protect the environment."@en1
