"Mr President, in my speech, I want to express my full support for the right of every citizen of the European Union to submit a petition to the European Parliament.
The petition must be in the form of a complaint or request concerning questions that come under the remit of the European Union. This right should not be abused, as it has been in the case where a request has been made, in the framework of a petition, for revocation of Decree 1487 of 2007 of the National Council of the Slovak Republic concerning the inviolability of the Beneš Decrees. The petitioner has referred to a non-existent resolution, on the basis of which he has requested that the Slovak Republic’s membership of the European Union should be revoked. This petition has been formally admitted, but in reality it should have been found inadmissible, in view of the fact that it referred to a non-existent resolution. Since this did not happen, the petition has been discussed in committee, pointlessly occupying the committee, the Commission and the follow-up committee.
There will definitely be other attempts to abuse the right of petition in the future; therefore, the competent authorities must strengthen their approach to evaluating petitions, rather than the committee asking for the Commission’s point of view."@en1
