"Mr President, I requested the floor in order to speak on labour and social rights, but developments in the Middle East are extremely critical for the Palestinian people and for the peoples of the region in general. The Communist Party of Greece therefore wishes, from this podium, to express its condemnation of Israel’s military operations in the Gaza Strip, including the murder of 91 Palestinians, with 24 children and many women among the victims, and hundreds more injured. We demand an end to Israel’s murderous air raids in the Gaza Strip, and the withdrawal of Israeli occupation forces from the Palestinian territories. We support the struggle of the Palestinian people to create an independent, viable Palestinian state within the 1967 borders and with East Jerusalem as its capital. Ladies and gentlemen, the anti-popular policy of the EU monopolies and the governments of the Member States is aimed against the minimal labour and social rights remaining to the working class and the popular strata. It does away with the universality of the national general collective labour agreement, and now the minimum wages are set by law, by the governments. The results are mass unemployment, starvation wages and pensions, an increase in the pension age; destruction of state social security, health and welfare systems; poverty, misery and a living hell for the working class and the popular strata. Now is the time for a popular uprising. It is time to step up the fight against the monopolies, it is time to disengage from the European Union, time for unilateral debt cancellation for the debt-burdened countries. It is time for people’s power."@en1
