"Mr President, Slovenia has been hit by truly terrible floods. Fortunately there were no human fatalities in this unfortunate situation. There has been material damage on a huge scale, with thousands of residential buildings flooded out, many of them entirely destroyed. Landslides have carried away many sections of road, so the clean-up operation will be long and challenging. We have moved people, but the roads will take time.
The worst floods along the River Drava have shown that climate change is a reality to which we must adapt. This applies also to the dangers and problems of a chain of hydroelectric power stations. The wave of water threatened dams, so the flow had to be increased in Austria through additional emptying of storage dams. This unfortunately caused an overflowing of banks and flooding, major damage in Slovenia and additional threats below the dams.
We need better mechanisms for managing hydroelectric power stations in catastrophic weather, as well as proper cross-border material solidarity in dealing with the consequences and reimbursing damage. Without the European Union this is not possible, so for this reason we need the EU budget and solidarity mechanisms."@en1
