"Mr President, colorectal cancer is the most common cancer in Europe. Bearing in mind the guidelines for colorectal cancer screening from 2010, last week I hosted the conference which launched a White Paper setting the standards for the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and care of colorectal cancer across Europe.
With 450 000 new cases of this cancer being diagnosed every year in the EU, what struck me was the opportunity to reduce the number of new cases. Speakers confirmed the possibility of reducing new cases by 30 % by embracing a lifestyle of healthy food, exercise and not smoking. Screening can identify a further 30 %. Such initiatives could prevent about 270 000 new cases per year. I therefore ask the Commission to urge the implementation of a local primary health strategy, to embrace a healthy lifestyle, awareness campaigns and the early introduction of screening programmes across Europe so that we can meet our goals of healthy ageing by 2020."@en1
