"Mr President, Ms Reding, Europe has shown huge potential in terms of economic growth and social cohesion, but its mission is not purely economic: the protection of citizens and the right to housing, especially in the case of the more vulnerable groups, or in emergency situations, should be a priority for the European programme and in its legislation.
Thousands of families in Europe are losing their homes, especially in Spain, as a result of the grave economic and financial crisis. We frequently hear of citizens who take their own life rather than face eviction from their home. For this reason, we need to take urgent action and ensure that what is happening now does not recur in the future: lifelong financial hardship.
On the basis of the principle of effective judicial protection, the Court of Justice of the European Union ruled that the Spanish Land Register Law infringes European law. Despite pressure from its citizens, the Spanish Government has not reacted.
I would therefore request the European institutions to ensure that Spain complies with the rights guaranteed under Council Directive 93/13/EEC."@en1
