"Mr President, ladies and gentlemen, I welcome the decision for the EU to use the sum from the Nobel Peace Prize to support children suffering as a result of war or other armed conflict. There has been an increase in child poverty and violence against children worldwide as a consequence of such conflicts, and we must fight them with all the means at our disposal.
Nevertheless, I would like to draw your attention to another phenomenon that is a serious problem here in the Union and which affects our young people day after day. We often hear the expression ‘lost generation’ owing to the large proportion of youth unemployment, so it is important to create as many governmental programmes as possible to improve the youth employment situation, and to establish forums where young people themselves can express their opinions to decision-makers. I am therefore pleased that this has finally started in Hungary, under the ‘Új nemzedék’ [‘New Generation’] programme. Every young person has a talent within them that is waiting to be discovered and nurtured, and through this they will be able to develop skills that could increase competitiveness in the labour market. I would like to contribute to this personally with a written statement on the nurturing of talent, which has started this November. I hope you will support it."@en1
