"Mr President, I voted in favour of the resolution on Belarus for two reasons: to condemn the recent parliamentary elections and to demonstrate my support for the Belarusian citizens, who do not want to live under the authoritarian rule. The EU has long understood Lukashenko’s ruling methods and therefore the results of the elections were no surprise. They did not meet any basic standards set by the OSCE. Once again we were witness to the political farce that serves only the interests of Lukashenko.
Having lived in an occupied country myself, I know very well how important it is to know that you have not been forgotten and left in the cruel hands of the regime. This resolution is a signal of European support to the Belarusian people. There is no place for a dictatorship in Europe."@en1
