"Mr President, I also voted for this resolution on Russia’s accession to the WTO.
What I would like to say in this regard is that, when we in the European Union implement policies and when we build relations, we must always be mindful of the fact that the European Union is, above all, a community of values. We must apply the same standards in our relations with Russia as we apply to other countries. The human rights situation in Russia is still very worrying.
In our debates here, for example, we have raised the Khodorkovsky case, and, in my view, the European Union should have the courage to tackle issues of this nature more vigorously. If we look at Russia and Belarus, we can see that both have exactly the same policy, both have exactly the same attitude towards human rights issues, but regardless of that fact, we have the courage to talk big to Belarus but not to Russia, and on this matter we should have the same attitude toward all countries. I certainly hope that this accession to the WTO will mean that human rights issues in Russia will begin to become more prominent and assume a better form."@en1
