". In 2006, I had the opportunity to lead a mission to Cambodia to assess the democratic changes in that country. During the mission, among other things, we saw that the functioning of the judiciary was a weak link in the system. The Cambodian people were waiting for the establishment of a Khmer Rouge Tribunal. Although that Tribunal was set up in 2006, it does not seem to be functioning efficiently. Indeed, it is facing financial problems, which is slowing down the hearings because it cannot afford the staff it needs to function. Moreover, many international organisations have made numerous accusations of political interference in the Tribunal by the Cambodian regime. In addition to the cases of restrictions on freedom of expression, as a member of the EP’s Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development, I am particularly appalled at the numerous cases of displacement of the population and dispossession of land for economic gain. Many land rights campaigners have already been detained in Cambodian prisons. It is time for Cambodia to show better respect for human rights."@en1
