"Mr President, I believe that the European Union, Cambodia’s main aid donor, must insist upon its authorities adopting the electoral reforms requested over the last four years by international bodies. The threats to the fragile Cambodian democracy will increase as next year’s election approaches. I believe that more pressure is needed from the European Commission to ensure fair and democratic elections, based on the UN recommendations.
The first requirement is to stop mass evacuations and the excessive use of force against protesters. We also call for the immediate and unconditional release of all of the regime’s critics, and acceptance of the role of the opposition, which is essential for a credible and legitimate electoral process."@en1
