"Madam President, Commissioner, I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to the Commissioner for his statement. What you described, Commissioner, what the European Commission is doing and planning to do, is just what we have all been referring to in this House. The issue is pretty clear. Essentially, we need to be consistent. First and foremost, we must be consistent in relation to sanctions against those who violate human rights. We know who they are, and unfortunately their number is increasing. Secondly, we need to be consistent in our support for civil society and the free media. I should like to draw attention to two specific issues. Firstly, there is a project known as which has so far been consistently supported by Poland and a couple of other countries. I think it is now time for European funding to be devoted to this initiative. Secondly, we cannot fail to provide assistance to people who are suffering. I actually met with Mr Alexei Mikhailevich, a former presidential candidate, a few days ago. Mr Mikhailevich was tortured and was granted asylum in the Czech Republic. However, his family, wife and children have remained in Belarus, and to put things plainly, they have nothing to live on. We should deal with this, too."@en1
