"It should have been possible to reconcile the appointment of Yves Mersch with respect for the principle of non-discrimination against women. If this did not happen, it was because of the disappointing attitude of the President of the European Council in his two statements of position in connection with this affair. We had a right to expect a degree of pragmatism from him. I would like to refer to my proposal of 13 September 2012, published in calling on the relevant authorities to look beyond the six members of the Executive Board of the ECB and consider the economic, financial and monetary aspect of the EU as a whole. There was a real prospect of a high-level solution: the European Council needed only to agree to prioritise the appointment of women to senior posts in the near future. With this compromise, no one would have lost face, and the provisions of the Treaty on non-discrimination would have been upheld."@en1
