This appointment has crystallised the issues of gender parity within the European Union, particularly with regard to the Executive Board of the European Central Bank (ECB), which currently has no female members. This is why the European Parliament advised the Council of Ministers of the European Union to reject the appointment of Yves Mersch as a Member of the Executive Board of the ECB. Despite being an ardent supporter of gender parity, I have decided to vote in favour of his appointment as I believe the ECB must be fully operational, particularly in view of the current economic crisis."@en1
