The single market came into being with the objective of strengthening ties between citizens and Member States, and is characterised as an area without internal borders where people, goods, services and capital can move freely. The single market is an essential element for achieving the objectives of the Europe 2020 strategy. However, much remains to be done to make it more effective. It is therefore important in the year we celebrate its 20th anniversary that we highlight the main concerns of European citizens and business as regards its functioning. For these reasons, I voted in favour of the report in the European Parliament."@en1
