"With new rules it will be possible to simplify the right of EU citizens to protection in third countries. Sharing new legislative instruments from the perspective of having a common approach to consular protection will facilitate the use of any Member State’s diplomatic or consular authority in many different cases, from the loss of identity documents to arrest, detention or death. I view in a very positive light the proposal to leave to the Union delegation the role of coordination and assistance in crisis situations in which EU citizens in a third country are caught up. Attributing a leading coordination role to the Union delegation could facilitate consular protection and strengthen the role of the extensive network of EU delegations when it comes to consular protection. For these reasons I voted in favour."@en1
