The right of a citizen of an unrepresented Member State to seek assistance from the consular authorities of other Member States that are represented is one of the rights conferred by EU citizenship. It is a right that has existed for some years, but European citizens are still not fully informed of it. As a member of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs, I am more than satisfied with the work done on this report. I believe that the measures adopted will improve the enforcement of this right, through better coordination between Member States on consular representation. The only doubt that remains is how these new measures will be publicised among European citizens. I think that a coordinated campaign of information at European level could be the most effective way of achieving the results we hope for."@en1
