Within the framework of the existing common fisheries policy legislation, Article 17(2), of Council Regulation (EC) No 2371/2002 establishes a derogation from the equal access principle within 12 nautical miles of each Member State. The derogation is in place from 1 January 2003 until 31 December 2012. The rapporteur supports a two-year extension of that period. The European Parliament approved his position at first reading, adopting the Commission proposal, on which I voted in favour."@en1
