". The common fisheries policy (CFP) has not succeeded in protecting fisheries resources and the balance of the ecosystem any more than it has managed to prevent economic and social damage to a particularly important sector of activity. Management of coastal areas by their Member States is one of its rare successes. That is why the extension of this zone in space and time is a step in the right direction for the complete overhaul of the CFP. The future CFP must propose local solutions within the framework of partnerships with the Member States and the large coastal regions. It must also give a larger role to producers and improve consumer protection. Finally, the new CFP must not simply take a free trade approach. In international negotiations, fisheries products should be treated as ‘sensitive products’ just like certain agricultural products."@en1
