".
I voted for this resolution on the conservation and sustainable exploitation of fisheries resources. It is important that the European Parliament has voted unanimously in plenary to extend the 12-mile access regime until an agreement on a new common fisheries policy (CFP) has been reached. If we had voted against, the 12-mile regime would have ended at the end of this year. I agree with the rapporteur that this would be completely unacceptable and unthinkable. It is important that management within the coastal zones by individual Member States has been stable and successful, whilst the common fisheries policy was impracticable owing to over-centralised and ineffective Brussels control. I agree with the rapporteur that the general effectiveness of Member State control within the 12-mile zones clearly demonstrates that management appropriate to circumstances is most effective."@en1
