I voted in favour of this report because I believe that the rules which the European Union applies for the inspection of seed must also be complied with by third countries which export these products into the Union. In addition, seed should be produced in accordance with all of the safety standards which the Union lays down. This is our only means of ensuring that human and animal safety will not be put at risk.
It is important for us to know whether seed marketed within the Union, including seed which has not been formally certified, has been treated with chemicals or whether the variety has been genetically modified. Not least, detailed rules on the exact information that must be mentioned on the labels of certified seed imported into the European Union will have to be upheld."@en1
